Michael Roche scoops a Bluegrass Autumn Tour Double at Lusk Equestrian
The first round of the 2015 Bluegrass Autumn Pony Tour got underway in style last weekend, hosted by Lusk Equestrian Centre, who produced a thrilling spectacle of pony show jumping at it’s very finest, making an immediate positive impression with competitors, spectators and sponsor alike.
The Bluegrass Autumn Pony Tour, now successfully in it’s third annual running, has become a major stage for young rider and equine talent alike, attracting in excess of 250 ponies at each round, hosted in some of the very finest venues in Ulster Region and kindly sponsored once again in 2015 by Bluegrass Horse Feeds.

It was great to see so many new faces as well as seeing how others had progressed from the Spring series. The action-packed-day got underway in dazzling sunshine with the Bluegrass 128 50cm attracting quite an impressive turn out of young competitors who produced some very stylish double clears to win a fabulous array of beautiful rugs on offer; Double clears included; Casper (Ur) Adam Adair William Jnr Adair, Curolea Rosi Maria Carr Janet Currie, Greenfield Mayflower Jessica Baxter Aldyth Roulston, Melview Murphy's Flight Harry Rush Harry Sen. Hughes, Only My Eoin Adam Adair William Jnr Adair, Poppy (HPA) India Heffron Heffron Equine LTD, Scarletts Bubblicious Kym Moore Niki Taylor, Sparkling Little Gold Natalie McKenna Teresa McKenna, Scarletts Multipla Amelie Beyssat Sarah Beyssat, Strawberry Starburst Jessica Baxter Janet Roulston.
Emily Steele made an immediate impression in the Bluegrass Autumn Pony Tour title race when she landed a Bluegrass 128 Under 10s victory after an impressive performance in a time of 27.95 aboard her mum Victoria Steel’s ‘Bright Bling’ getting an all important 10 points on the board at this early stage. Second and third spot went to Charles Heffron and ‘Ballykett Highlander’ 29.38 and ‘Dandy’ 29.69 respectively with a well earned fourth place going to Oliver Doherty aboard ‘Emerald Lucky’ in a time of 29.83
The very talented Alex Finney is certainly on-fire at the moment, winning a seven pony jump-off aboard ‘Ballyknock Master Roan’ setting a scorching pace of 26.52 pinching the win and capturing third place aboard ‘Some Journey’ in a time of 26.95 in the Bluegrass 128 1m leaving Natasha Kerr and ‘The Nut Cracker’ in second spot with 26.89.
Ten riders progressed to the jump-off in the Bluegrass 138 1.10 with Anabelle Heffron and ‘Double Trouble Boy’ coming out on top taking all the turns in a blistering time of 36.69 leaving Alex Finney and ‘Coltstown Dun Crusier’ in second with 37.32 and Eve Donnelly in third aboard ‘Mayfly Green Peter’ in a time of 38.41.
Michael Roche scooped the double winning the Bluegrass Autumn Tour 148 1.10m board ‘Dunroe Bridie’ in a time of 28.09 setting the pace for Dylan Ward and ‘Drunlohan Glen’ who finished in a time of 28.50 forcing Leah McVeigh and ‘Classiebawn Scardens Jack’ into third spot with 30.26.
The very much on-form Michael Roche also produced a brilliant performance in the Bluegrass Autumn Tour 148 1.20m with ‘Shravgh Boy’ to defeat a high-class field forcing Bluegrass Spring Series Champion Carl Webb and ‘Future Lady’ into second place, Leah McVeigh and ‘Classiebawn Scardens Jack’ into third and MacKenzie Healy and ‘Drishoge Jewel’ into fourth.
With everything to jump for the Ulster Region Children On Horses talent was certainly on show with Jennifer Torrens and ‘Lackaview Star’, part of the 1m and 1.10m winning teams at National Pony and Young Rider Championships in Mullingar, produced a thrilling round to take the Bluegrass Children On Horses 1m leaving Katie Conlon and ‘Tullymore Katie’ in second place.
MacKenzie Healy and her faithful Children On Horses partner in crime ‘Lolita’ fresh from her amazing performance at the National Pony and Young Rider Championships in Mullingar with spots in both the Children On Horses 1.10m and 1.20m winning teams, as well as a respectable second place in the Children On Horses National Championship, threw the gauntlet down in the first round of the Bluegrass Children On Horse’s 1.10m/1.20m Handicap with a spectacular win securing ten points on the leaderboard after round one with Katie Conlon and ‘Tullymore Katie’ taking second place and picking up eight points.
The hugely popular Bluegrass Autumn Pony Tour will run over eight weeks with rounds in all corners of the province and will culminate in a fabulous 'Finale of Bluegrass Champions' at Connell Hill Equestrian Centre on Saturday 17th October 2015.
